ENERGY STAR is a joint program of the US Environmental Protection Agency and the US Secretary of State for Energy, helping to save money and protect the environment through energy-efficient products and practices.
In 1992, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) introduced ENERGY STAR as a voluntary labeling scheme aiming at identifying and promoting energy-efficient products to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Computers and screens were the first products to be labeled. Since 1995, E.P.A. has extended the brand to additional office and home heating products and cooling equipment. In 1996, E.P.A. works with the US Department of Energy for specific product categories. The ENERGY STAR signal is now in large appliances such as commercial washers, commercial dryers, coin washers, coin dryers, office equipment, lighting, home appliances, and more.
Through collaborations with more than 20,000 individuals and public sector organizations, the program provides the technical information and tools that organizations and consumers need to have to choose the most energy-efficient solutions and best management practices. It has successfully saved energy and costs across America, saving businesses, organizations, and consumers about $18 billion in 2010 alone. Over the last decade, the program has been the driving force behind the more extensive use of technological innovations such as fluorescent lamps, power management systems for office equipment, and low standby power consumption. ENERGY STAR provides a reliable signal for over 60 product categories.
